Chronicle of an Excavation - Part Two

Miscellaneous bits of activity on site in today's blog. Above and below: Dominic (undergraduate Leicester University) assisting in the setting up of a control point for the total station

Richard briefs the team on the recoreding methodology and use of the total station

Richard takes a reading - all artefacts are positioned in three-dimensional space with the total station

Geraldine and Richard confirm a reading

Jose Maria, Ana and Ciaran (University College Dublin) "patiently" wait while Geraldine marks the spot for a total station reading

as she moves to another point, the eager archaeologists get started on the Phoenician level

Dominic and Mark (undergraduate University of East Anglia) prepare to excavate - cave entrance in the background

Deeper in the cave, Marie (Gibraltar Museum Collections Manager) helps the total station team setting up for the Palaeolithic levels

Mark watches Jimbob and Antonio getting started on the Palaeolithic levels at the back of the cave

Jimbob in full swing

Marco gets stuck in at the very back of the cave, leading towards a deep chamber. More on this one in future blogs...

All this hard work needs nourishment and the team breaks off for lunch by the sea

Richard uses the lunch break to read up

Paco has a cat nap

while Marco goes for a full-blown siesta!
